The University of Victoria didn't have many offensive chances in their home matchup with Eastern Washington on Friday night, but they made the most of them in picking up a 4-1 victory at the Ian Stewart Complex.
Jack Palmer opened the scoring for the Vikes in the first period and his marker stood as the only goal of the game until midway through the third. UVic mustered just 14 pucks on Eagles netminder Austin Brihn but scored on four, including on all three of their shots in the final stanza.
Logan Nachtegaele, Thomas Cankovic and Liam Shaw also scored for Victoria, while Tyler Zandhuisen replied in the loss for EWU. Cankovic's goal was the first of his B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League career.
Alec Dillon turned aside 24 shots to pick up his third victory of the season for the home side, while Brihn made 10 saves in a losing effort.
The Vikes win, combined with Vancouver Island University's loss on Friday night in Burnaby, moves UVic to within five points of fourth place in the standings and a playoff berth.
The Eagles drop to 1-12-0-1 on the season and fall 11 points behind VIU in the race for a spot in the postseason. They'll have an opportunity to make up ground on Saturday when they travel north to Nanaimo to take on the Mariners. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 PM start.
