Simon Fraser University needed a big game performance on Friday night in Nanaimo and got exactly that, keeping alive their hopes of catching Vancouver Island University for third place in the league standings with a 6-2 victory over the Mariners.
Mac Colasimone opened the scoring three minutes into regulation and Nicholas Holowko doubled the lead later in the first period. The Clan kept coming in the second, as Brendan Lamont and Colasimone both scored within the first eight minutes of the frame to go up by four.
VIU forward Alex Hanson got his team on the board with a shorthanded tally late in the second, and Garrett Dunlop tacked on a power-play marker early in the third to bring the hosts back within two. But the comeback attempt was short lived, as Cole Plotnikoff and Lamont each replied within minutes to put the game out of reach.
Ryan Sandrin had another solid performance between the pipes for the Clan, stopping 34 shots to pick up his third victory since January 26th. Matt Huber was beaten six times while making 25 saves in the loss.
With the win, SFU pulls within six points of VIU for third place in the BCIHL standings. VIU's regular season is complete, leaving SFU with four games to make up the gap beginning with a home contest against Trinity Western on Monday afternoon.
